You can omit dried minced onion and substitute 1/4 minced onion and bell pepper- add to beef as it is being browned.
Substitute ground turkey for ground beef if you like.
Top sloppy Joe meat with coleslaw for a 'Carolina style' Sloppy Joe.
Canned Sloppy Joe Sauce and I have a history of disappointment.
Multiple times I my life I have bought it, brought it home, opened it, and realized there is no meat in it. I then realized I have paid three dollars for a can of bad barbecue sauce that is chock full of high fructose corn syrup and no meat. Then I forget after a couple years and do it again. No more!
I always think of this amazing skit about the lunch lady in a cafeteria. She is not the student’s favorite person because she mangles so many beloved foods. A guy dressed as sloppy Joe shows up and reminds the kids that she is responsible for making them sloppy Joes and they should be grateful. It’s a ridiculous skit, but I will always think of it.
I’m skipping the ketchup in my version because there is so much sugar in ketchup. Why not use brown sugar and molasses ? My sauce is less sweet than most, adjust to your personal taste and enjoy a quick, tasty dinner that is certainly a crowd pleaser with kids.
