Sloppy Joe (Yeah!)

Ingredients

  • Ingredients: 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 8 oz. can tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp. smoked paprika
  • 1 tbsp. dried minced onion
  • 3 generous tablespoons molasses
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. dried mustard
  • 1 tsp. Worcester sauce
  • 2 tbsp. cooking oil of choice

Instructions

  1. Instant pot method: On saute setting, brown ground beef with cooking oil of choice. Add all other ingredients and use meat setting for 8 minutes. Remove cover, use saute setting to thicken sauce to desired consistency
  2. Stove top Method: Brown ground beef with cooking oil of choice on medium heat. Add all other ingredients and simmer until desired consistency.
  3. Slow cooker Method: Combine all ingredients and set on low 6-8 hours or high 4-6 hours, stirring every hour to break up ground beef as it cooks.
  4. Variations:
  5. Gluten Free: Skip the buns and use a baked potato instead!
  6. Vegan: Beyond Beef Crumbles make a fantastic ground beef substitute.
  7. You can omit dried minced onion and substitute 1/4 minced onion and bell pepper- add to beef as it is being browned.
  8. Substitute ground turkey for ground beef if you like.
  9. Top sloppy Joe meat with coleslaw for a 'Carolina style' Sloppy Joe.

Canned Sloppy Joe Sauce and I have a history of disappointment.

Multiple times I my life I have bought it, brought it home, opened it, and realized there is no meat in it. I then realized I have paid three dollars for a can of bad barbecue sauce that is chock full of high fructose corn syrup and no meat. Then I forget after a couple years and do it again. No more!

I always think of this amazing skit about the lunch lady in a cafeteria. She is not the student’s favorite person because she mangles so many beloved foods. A guy dressed as sloppy Joe shows up and reminds the kids that she is responsible for making them sloppy Joes and they should be grateful. It’s a ridiculous skit, but I will always think of it.

I’m skipping the ketchup in my version because there is so much sugar in ketchup. Why not use brown sugar and molasses ? My sauce is less sweet than most, adjust to your personal taste and enjoy a quick, tasty dinner that is certainly a crowd pleaser with kids.

What’s your favorite meal to make for little ones?
