Dairy free ranch dressing three ways


  • Ingredients: 1 cup mayonnaise or Veganaise
  • 1 tbsp- 1/4 cup unsweetened milk of choice varies based on desired consistency (I'm using unsweetened plain coconut milk)
  • 1 tbsp minced onion fresh or dried
  • 1 tsp: ground pepper preferably fresh ground
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder or 1/2 tbsp fresh minced garlic
  • 1 tbsp dill dried or fresh
  • 1 tbsp parsley dried or fresh
  • 1/2 tsp salt to taste


  1. Method: Whisk all ingredients together, allow to sit in refrigerator for at least 4 hours. After this, season to taste with salt and additional spices
  2. Variations:
  3. Chipotle ranch: Prepare as directed above, add 1 Chipotle pepper (from canned Chipotle peppers in Adobo sauce) combine in blender
  4. Basil ranch: Prepare as directed above, add 2 tbsp. dried basil
  5. Buttermilk Ranch: Combine all ingredients except milk. Add 1 tsp lemon juice to your milk of choice and allow to sit at room temperature for five minutes- if milk 'curdles' that's perfectly normal. Add milk and lemon juice mixture, chill four hours and season to taste
  6. Vegan: Substitute Vegannaise for mayonnaise, use any recipe listed above

I was one of those kids you were worried about because they liked ranch dressing too much.

Ranch on salad. Ranch on burgers. Ranch on potatoes. I once tried ranch on ice cream, if you’re wondering where the line was, that was it. Over the years I became a purist- most bottles store bought varieties are too bitter for my tastes. Store bought varieties also contain MSG, not my best friend. My version is thick, creamy, and full of flavor. In Germany they call the Ranch flavor “Cool American!” It’s very strange to see that printed on a bag of Doritos.

Going dairy free was difficult because finding good ranch in stores became impossible. It took me some time to realize I could make my own versions so much better. The two variations are inspired by restaurant favorites.

You can also make your own mayonnaise for this recipe very simply. More on that later. At the very least, use a good brand mayonnaise. May I suggest a Southern classic- one with a yellow lid? I talked to A man who was deployed who actually begged his wife to send him care packages with this special brand. For a ‘dip’ style ranch, add very little milk. For more of a pourable dressing style, add more.

This sauce serves as an awesome base for pasta or chicken salads. Go for broke and add a couple slices of crumbled bacon for bacon ranch pasta salad. For a vegan pasta salad, dice some cherry tomatoes and red onion for a flavorful, colorful salad. Your next potluck will thank you.

The Chipotle ranch is incredible with quesadillas, burgers, wings, or Southwestern inspired salads. The basil ranch is a wonderful accompaniment to any Italian meal.
